What I did: To get familiar with my manikin head, I took some time to just just touch the hair and explore. I combed the hair out and examined the ends. I haven’t washed the hair yet but my project facilitator advised that I wash her hair before we cut it.

Reflection: It was weird! In a way, I was a little bit grossed out about touching the hair just because it’s not mine and stuff like that really does gross me out. It wasn’t really until that very moment that  I realized that if I were to become a hairstylist, I would have to touch all sorts of hair types. I even asked Penny what it was like and if it bothered her. She replied by saying that it wasn’t “too bad” and that over time, “you get used to it!”

What I did: After learning the parts of the head, I decided to change things up and look through a magazine to get inspired by all the different types of cuts and styles hairstylists are offering us today. After reading/looking through many articles/pictures, I finally came to a conclusion of what is  considered “in” and what is not. I learned that women who are forty or older should not wear long hair because it tends to weigh them down, enhancing their wrinkles. I also learned that women with square shaped faces should wear a side-swept bang to soften out the lines of their face!

Reflection: I think it’s really neat that there are certain haircuts that you can wear to depict a certain image. I also thought it was very interesting that women over forty shouldn’t wear their hair long, but I do have questions on the topic. Plenty of actresses, who are well over forty, wear their hair long but they seem to be able to pull it off perfectly well! Is it because of all the plastic surgery they get done or do experts think they shouldn’t be wearing their hair long either??
